Kimmi W

I'm trying to think of a theme for my 18th birthday party. I'm female. I really want a party that I can dress up for and money is an issue. I was given the suggestion of a masquerade ball, but I'm not sure I could pull that off. It is February 25 and my birthday is September 25. I have a lot of time to plan, but I figured I would get a head start since I need time to find out where I can hold my party!!

Any ideas are appreciated!! Thanks!

--------------------------------------...

Luaus are colorful and fun, and the food is fabulous. So, if you ask me, I think planning a luau is a great way to have a party. Limbo on down the page and check it out...

Invitation:

Make a flier or buy a luau invitation at your local party/stationery store, but instead of sending it alone, prove you're creative and include a flower hair comb for your girlfriends and a flower wrist/ankle lei for the guys. Tell them they must wear the enclosed pieces on their bodies somewhere, and that you want them to dress luau-creative. That will get them talking long before the party!

Outside Entrance:

To make a grand entrance, place bamboo tiki torches outside your door as the first indication to your guests that this is going to be the luau to remember. You may even want to adorn your porch rail or doorway with parrot and/or palm tree lights for a festive effect. Add a CD player with island music to create the perfect atmosphere. If you are really adventurous and can stand the ridicule and neighbor gossip, use pink flamingos to adorn your front yard or line them up the driveway or front sidewalk.

Inside Entrance:

Use netting as your backdrop. Have a big basket of multi-color leis inside the door where people can help themselves to a few. I would plan on 5 or 6 per person so that they can be creative and festive with their leis. If you think you have the time, stand at the door and greet everyone with a lei--this is always a nice gesture and a traditional way of saying aloha. If you are really talented, have a ukulele on hand to serenade your guests as they enter. Maybe put a note on the basket urging them to wear them wherever they please. This will make for fun photo opportunities (you can send them later as a thank you for attending the party).

Backyard:

The backyard is just as fun to decorate as the rest of the house, so donât neglect this space if weather permits or if you plan to expand the party outside. Paper lanterns might be a nice touch, whether inside or in the back yard. Tribal masks are fun, too. Hang wind chimes and wooden parrots to give a complete background to your setting. Shells, sand and perhaps a mini-pool is order here as well. If you really want to go crazy, rent realistic looking fake palm trees and wooden totem poles to place around the yard/patio. Candle votives are a must, but donât forget the citronella candles.

Seating Cards or Name Tags:

If you are assigning seats or if you want to give out nametags (and this is wise when you have a lot of friends that don't know each other), hereâs a thought: thongs. You know, the rubber kind you wear on your feet with a flower in the center? They make for a great nametag or seating card. Just write the name in magic marker, add a 25¢ chain or ribbon (necklace) and voila--a humorous way to get people talking about your creativity and their thongs. Line them up alphabetically on a table near the entrance.

Another thought on this is to use starfish or sand dollars and write the name of the person on it. For nametags, string some ribbon around it.

Buffets:

Using grass skirts, make a table skirt around the buffet table to bring Hawaii right inside your home. Use a green plastic or linen tablecloth over the buffet and pin the skirting to the edges. Add fabulous tropical Mylar balloons (all you need is some helium) in the shape of fish, palm trees and other related shapes, so buffets can be seen from anywhere at the party. Use beachcomber hats (multi-color or plain) upside down to hold different snacks and munchies. Throw a mixture of fabulous foil-wrapped chocolate fish and island party confetti across your table. Your guests will really WOW at your thoughtfulness and carry-through. Provide tropical toothpicks as a final touch. Use baskets on each buffet to hold luncheon napkins, luau-theme

where is the best place to go to start my own invitation business?

Q. Everyone is always having me draw up their birthday party invites or invites to other events that they plan, so I figured I would start my own little business, but I don't know how, or even where to begin. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't have a lot of money, but I really want to get this started.

Answer
If you want to start an online business and sell your invitations online you can go to Pure E-Commerce. They can help you start a website from scratch and you also get step by step consultation from them on how to start and run the business. I went through them for my site, So Sweet Stationery, and they are wonderful. Their website is http://www.pure-ecommerce.com. You can also take a look at my site to see an example http://www.sosweetstationery.com.

Another option would be to work with existing stationery and invitation sites and have them sell your product on their sites and all you do is all of the creating and printing.

Good luck and I would love to see some examples of your stationery!!!

My Mom Birthday Party?

POTATOCHIP

So, my sister and I are going to throw my mom a surprise party. But, I don't know what to do for a mom. What do I do? If it helps She is turning forty-five.

Answer
You should begin by setting a budget. How much money do you have to spend? Are there any close relatives that can help you pay for it? Don't assume that just because you're organizing it, that you have to do all the work or pay for it all.

What does your mother like to do? Does she have a hobby?

Maybe she's always wanted to go somewhere (like Hawaii, Caribbean, Paris?) but has never been able to go. Make one of those places the theme for the party and set up your house, yard, or wherever, to look like that place. Once you have a theme, share the idea with your crew of helpers.

Give friends and family different jobs: Invitations, decorations. Let someone plan the menu, let another person ask close family and friends to help make food (unless you can afford to cater this party). Keep track of who has what job too & their emails & phone number.

Maybe you and your sister can write (or print out) some nice facts about your mother on pretty stationery, cut it into strips and then roll it up, tie it in a ribbon (like little scrolls) and put them in a basket. When guests arrive they can each take one out of the basket (sort of like a favor). If you're not having too many people and you have the time each guest can read their fact aloud. Otherwise people will just open them during the night and compare them!

Does someone you know play an instrument? Have CDs that she'd like?

Who do you know that would just love the chance to play photographer? Or else just put a few disposable cameras around and let everyone take photos.

Have a poster board with a picture of your mom doing something fun or one where she looks good, and have everyone sign it like one big card.

Once you pick your theme you'll be surprised at how easy it will be to think of things to do.

Most of all be prepared with a few tissues when she sees how much you loved her and how hard you all worked just to make her birthday so special!

I need ideas for a 60th birthday party that I'm hosting. Help please!?

This will be in late september with about 100 people. I'm looking for some kind of nostalgic ideas for a this is your life thing.

Answer
How fun!

For a "This Is Your Life" theme, use one central idea, such as music or television, and dedicate each table to a different decade of that theme. For example:

One idea is a "Music Through the Decades" theme . For instance, one table can be '40s big band/swing, such as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Another table is for the '50s do-wop music, '60s is the "Age of Aquarius", '70s is disco, etc. Put a center piece on each table with a big music note on it, along with a small banner with the name of a popular song that defines the decade. Then you can scatter symbols for each decade around the music note (use nautical symbols for the '40s, a doll-sized poodle skirt for the '50s, etc.) You can find the music notes and the themes at a party supply store or on the internet. Or you can go with bands that define each decade, such as Elvis, the Beatles, the Doors, etc.

Also consider a "Television Through the Decades" theme. Ozzie and Harriet, I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, etc. A centerpiece is easy for this one: decorate a box to look like a TV, print out a still photo from the TV shows, and glue them on to the TV.

Consider what the birthday person likes. Fashion? You can do a Fashion Through the Decades theme (poodle skirts, bell bottoms, etc.). Sports? Do a Sports Heroes Through the Decades theme.

In your invitation, send along a blank piece of stationery in the theme of the party. Request that each guest write a letter stating how they know the birthday person and their favorite memory of him/her. Even if you don't read them at the party, the birthday person will enjoy reading them later.

Also request that guests send you copies of their favorite pictures of themselves with the birthday person. You can have them send it to you ahead of time and make a collage or a scrapbook to present to the birthday person at the party, or the guests can bring the pictures to the party and they can assemble the collage or scrapbook there.

Another fun game is to have questionnaires at each plate asking questions about the birthday person. Such as, "What was his/her favorite toy to play with as a child?" "What color was his/her childhood bedroom?" "Who was his/her high school crush?" "What was his/her first job?" etc. After everyone has filled them out, have the birthday person answer the questions aloud. The guests will score their own papers, and the guest(s) who score the highest will win a prize. You can choose something fun and inexpensive things such as scratch-off lottery tickets or a big candy bar for prizes.

Have fun at your party. Let us know how it goes!
