I am hosting a birthday party for my one year old, it's coming up in exactly 2 weeks from today. I've already sent invitations last week and I've made food arrangements. But I'm having a lot of troubles coming up with activities.
I need any and all ideas for fun activities to do at the party. What were some fun things you did at your child's first birthday, or a birthday you've attended?

Answer
Unless you've got a lot of other kids attending, you don't really need any activities at a first birthday. The baby will be happy being amused by all the grandparents and aunts uncles and cousins, and then with the cake and the presents. Adults would be happiest socializing or snacking.

If you have older kids attending, a table with coloring books or simple games like pin the tail on the donkey or musical chairs works just fine (your one year old may enjoy watching the other kids run around the chairs, or coloring, too!).

At my son's first birthday everyone there was either a preteen or older, or a baby too. So I didn't design any activities. I did have a table set up that had a page of his scrapbook for everyone to sign and write their birthday wishes and it also had the whole scrapbook and photo album from his first year. The family members that were more distant had a good time passing that around.

We did presents and cake, and general socializing, and that was it. The party was about three hours or so and everyone had a great time.

Are save the date cards appropriate for child birthday parties?

Is is appropriate to send parents Save the Date cards of my child's birthday party? Her birthday falls in the summer when school is out, July to be exact. I just wanted to send a simple save the date card as a reminder of the upcoming party. I do intend to mail more formal invitations 2 weeks prior to the party. Oh, she'll be 9 years old.

Answer
I think it's a great idea. Kids with summer birthdays always get the short end of the stick, if only because it's impossible to reach many of the families. I can't imagine anyone taking offense at this.

It's unique. It's different. You're thinking outside the box. Good on ya.
