Im havin my 7 yr olds bday party in april, still got a while to plan i know. just wondering if anyone had any ideas on different things we could do, i am planning on getting a bounce house & clown for sure. wanting the circus/clown type of theme.

Invitations:
Clown Face: Write birthday party details on the back of a white paper plate. Photocopy a circus clown face and glue it to the other side of the plate, or draw one using a picture of a clown as a model. Use a felt-tip pen to add a funny mouth, wide-open eyes and other facial details, like freckles or rosy cheeks. Glue yarn hair at the top and a bow tie at the bottom. Then glue a red pompon in the middle of the face to make a nose. Mail the party invitation in a padded envelope.
Decorations:
Set up a circus tent: Swag colorful crepe-paper streamers from the center of the ceiling to the corners and sides of the room, and let them dangle down the walls to look like a circus' big top.
Cut two large appliance boxes into cages and paint them with bright colors, or cover them with animal-print paper or cloth. Set your circus cages in the party room with stuffed animals inside.
Decorate the table with toy clowns, stuffed animals and other circus accessories.
Play marching music in the background.
Costumes:
Make, rent or buy circus clown accessories, such as big feet, red noses, bow ties, orange or yellow wigs and white gloves. Offer them to the birthday child, and to party guests as they arrive. (Party stores and costume shops are good sources for such items.)
Games:
Toss the Clown Nose: Paint a large cardboard box to look like a clown face. Cut out the eyes, nose and mouth making wide holes; set the box in the middle of the party room. Give the party guests beanbags or balls to try to throw through the holes on the clown face.
Activities:
Clown Face: Ask a friend or parent come to the party and help paint clown faces on the children.
Animal Masks: Buy sheets of felt in animal colors (black, tan, brown, gray and so on). Cut the felt into circles the size of a child's face, and cut out eye and mouth holes. Staple or Super Glue a ribbon at each side, for tying the mask in the back. Search for large animal faces on posters and calendars, or in books and magazines. Copy, if necessary, and cut out the animal eyes, noses, mouths and ears. Let the kids glue the cutouts near the openings on the felt circles to make animal faces. Have your guests wear their masks and play at being animals-and don't forget to take pictures.
Circus Stunts: Have the kids perform simple stunts, such as a somersault, a tightrope walk on a piece of tape, a headstand against the wall (if they're old enough), an animal walk or a step through a Hula Hoop.
Food:
Make Elephant and Monkey Sandwiches (peanut butter and banana) for your hungry clowns. Serve with a side of Chocolate Tiger's Milk.
Serve Monkey's Favorite Treat: Stick bananas on Popsicle sticks, freeze and serve. If you like, roll the frozen bananas in peanut butter and sprinkle with crisped rice cereal.
Make or buy giant pretzels, a favorite circus treat, and serve with melted cheese or mild mustard.
Clown Cupcakes
Bake cupcakes and allow to cool.
Remove paper baking cups from the cupcakes.
Take clean paper baking cups, flatten them, and set cupcakes in the middle.
Frost cupcakes with white icing; the frosted cakes will be the clown face, and the flattened cups are clown collars.
Use tubes of colored icing to decorate the clown heads and faces.
Clown Cones
Fill sugar cones with balls of ice cream and place upside down on flattened paper baking cups. The cones are the hats and the balls of ice cream are the faces.
Add face details with icing.
Serve with Clown Cupcakes.
Favors:
To complete the circus them, give your party guests clown accessories, such as clown noses, bow ties, hats, feet and gloves.

What do little kids do at birthday parties, besides eat cake and ice cream? Should I do party bags? Streamers?

I love kids' bday parties, and I am known around our small town for my themed parties. I have won twice on www.birthdaypartyideas.com (pirates of the caribbean 7 yr old June 2004 I think? & spongebob 6 yr old 2005). However, I think I am not the norm, as many moms don't have the time or creative energy to do all that work. That website is a great idea for decorating, games, food, etc.
My point is, moms have said to me, "oh, my parties are so boring compared to yours". Not so according to my kids. Kids love parties period. My kids have never said my parties were better than "so and so's". But kids do need to keep busy. You don't have to do the themed thing, but kids do get a kick out of it. But my basic suggestions are (from experience):
1. Keep it 2 hours - 2 1/2 max.
2. Forget feeding them a meal. I find the best time is 1 to 3, or 2 to 4. I tried the lunch thing, and 90% of them did not eat as they were too excited. I threw the meals away.
3. DO have munchies tho' and juice boxes.
4. Plan for around 4 games, and depending on the child, a craft. I usually did craft from 1 to 1:30 -- allowing latercomers to arrive and do their craft; games from 1:30 to 2:15; cake & singing and gift opening and free-play from 2:15 to 3. It usually worked out fine.
5. If you're having it at your home, keep the party in one room. Bedrooms were off limits. I've heard of parties where a child's favourite toy is broken 'cuz of the barrage of kids in their room. I tell those that want to crash my son's room, "you can come another day for a play day". If it's an outdoor party, the kids stay outdoors unless they need to use the washroom.
6. I use the rule with my kids, "you can invite the same # of kids as the age you're turning", so if your child is turning 7, he/she can invite 7 friends.
7. Goody bags are a must -- and kids really look forward to them, so if you have extra money to spend, do it here. Dollar stores are great for this.
8. ALWAYS call moms/dads who do not RSVP your invite. Don't assume their child's coming if you haven't heard anything. I had a mom last year who didn't call me, because the invitation did not make it to her hands. Somewhere between school and home, her son lost it. So it's always good to follow up. Oh, and I typically send invites out 2 weeks before the party.
9. I like playing music at the party -- just to break the silence! My music was theme-related, so for Spongebob, I found Spongebob music off the web, etc.
Don't get stressed over it; plan early; and have fun!!
