How far in advance should I send out birthday invites when people may come from out of town?

I'm throwing my dad a surprise 60th birthday party at the end of August. Much of his family lives out of town. When would be the ideal time to send out the official birthday invites? My sister and I have talked about sending out invites, and then reminder notes a month later. I would rather just send the official invites and that be it. The party is scheduled for Aug 31st. Also, should we put a date on the invitation as the latest to RSVP?

Answer
I know it is a pain to sent things out twice, but your sister has a good plan - or you could do the reverse and send out "Save the Date" cards 2 to 3 months in advance and the real invite about a month ahead of time.

If you do only send out one invite give them one to two months notice.
YES include an RSVP by date! It will make it easier on you - there will still be people that don't send a response, but then you can call them and say you need to confirm if they will be there or not because you hadn't heard anything back.

How to word a birthday invitation - food wise?

I'm sending out my mom's 60th birthday party invites. I'm not so sure how to word this. We are in the midwest, so very casual, and we will have birthday cake, and some finger foods like chips n salsa. This iwll take place after the dinner hour at 7:00pm.
Do I put finger foods on the invitation or hou r ouerves? Do I even mention it? Do I mention casual dress?

thanks so much!

Answer
You could always mention "appetizers provided". I agree with Bob, "Finger food" sounds nasty.

Good luck! hope it goes well!
