Indian 50:th birthday party?

Meifa

Hi all,
Me/husband got invitation to attend my husband's employee's mothers birthday party. The person in question is Indian.

Where I live (in Europe), we don't invite colleagues to family celebrations, so this came as a surprise. It would be pretty cool and very interesting to be on a Indian party, but at same time, we want to be careful about unwritten cultural rules.

Is this is courtesy gesture of the Indian culture and we are supposed to refuse the invitation?
If we go, how are we supposed to behave as "the son's boss"?
Also, what kind of gift/value are we supposed to give? 50:th birthday must be pretty big thing.

Any advices, suggestions, tips welcome!
(The country in question is South Africa)

Answer
South African indians are quite laid back and dont worry about any "rules" just behave as you would at any other birthday party , greet , chat , make yourself comfortable ,
When it comes to Food , Im sure that not everything will be hot and spicy , when we invite someone , we make sure we cater for their need , in an Indian function , everything can go wrong , but the food must be perfect and everyone must be catered for , so i dont think food will be a problem. With regards to a gift , A scarf as mentioned is a good idea or even just a gift voucher will be fine.
The most important thing is to just enjoy and have fun.

50th Birthday Party Ideas?

Okay so my dads 50th birthday is in a few weeks and we are looking for some kind of cool "theme" to do the party in. he is kind of a redneck guy...like he loves larry the cable guy and the dukes of hazzard and that kind of stuff...I am looking for some kind of funny saying that people put on signs and invitations. Like for a 40th anniversary someone might do the "Lordy Lordy they made it 40" or whatever
we are just looking for something kinda funny like that
or maybe just some general ideas
it is a suprise birthday party if that means anything
any ideas?? Thanks!!!

Help John GIT-R-DONE at his 50th birthday party!- make it all Larry the Cable Guy theme- have guests dress in plaid or camouflage. play his comedy tapes on the TV, have plaid or camo decorations, maybe some poster animal targets on the walls, have a contest for best dressed Larry impersonation- give a DVD of Larry to the winner (make sure you mark best dressed Larry gets special prize on invites), maybe have a hat full of one liners from the comedy acts that your guests choose one and have to say it to your dad during the night, you can give away little items like bumper stickers or something that say Git-R-Done on them as party favors. or buy a Larry CD and make copies to give as party favors so when guests leave they can listen to it in their car as they drive away remembering the fun party!
get a photo cake made of Larry- maybe photoshop a picture of your dad in there with him- find good images online, print it out and take it to the grocery store and they make a picture cake with it.
for his present buy him tickets to see Larry when he comes to your town to go along with the theme! http://www.larrythecableguy.com/appear/
make a picture board of your dads pics throughout the years from birth to current (funnier the better!)- we did that for my moms 60th and she had such a good time showing off her pics to everyone!
