Princess Birthday party...How to ask guest to dress up?

confused

My daughter who is soon to be 4 wants a princess party. Since we will invite both boys and girls we have decided to have a " Princess Ball" My daughter will dress up like a pretty princess of course and with going with the theme we would like for each child to dress up as a princess or prince(knight) How do I word this in the invitations that each child should dress up. I will have a few extra dresses on hand for those who really can't afford a dress or don't want to buy one but not enough for everyone. I would like for each child to feel like a princess or prince since it will be a "Princess Ball" Also any ideas on food, decorations and games will be greatly appreciated thanks. But if you answer anything please answer how I can word the invites that its for both boys and girls and that each child should dress up to be part of the royal ball :) thanks
Also do you know where I can buy paper plates and decor that will go with the "Princess ball party"?

Answer
Why don't you word the invite as if you are the King and Queen inviting nobility to a grand royal ball.

So you could say King (partners name if you have one) and Queen (your name) request the pleasure of Prince/Princess (childs name after) at the Palace of (your address) for a Grand Royal Ball to celebrate the birthday of Princess (your daughters name). All royal guests are requested to dress in suitable regal atire such as Kings, Queens, Prince, Princesses or Knights to befit this grand occassion.

This will get the message across to the parents at any rate....that was a rough outline but im sure you get the idea. You could put the invitations on crown shapes or as scrolls which are dyed with a used teabag to make them look old and tied with a red ribbon.

I think making your room look glitzy is a must - fairy lights around the wall and maybe even kiddies chandeliers on the roof if possible would look great. If you have a lot of money to hand then hiring a bouncy castle would be fitting, but not everyone can afford this. The cake should be shaped like a palace perhaps, you can find an example here.....

For kids who dont come in costumes, you can get toy tiaras instead or role pieces of card into cone shapes and attach fabric draping down from the top of the cone - i've seen that style hat in kids stories before (not sure if you can picture what i mean though). Also even just getting red velvet feel fabric from a fabric shop and using it to make little capes would do for princes who dont turn up in outfits - and hats like those you get in crackers or just cutting crown shapes out of gold card, would also do for their outfits. Girls would probably love pink capes too actually. Fabric can be pretty cheap too!

Cover the table in a rich red cloth and make it regal by using a gold theme for plates etc.

Disney Princess stuff is popular, you could probably get their images on balloons.

You can get ordinary balloons and tie them in an arc shape around your door so it looks like a grand entrance....you could give them a little red carpet too maybe - not exactly royal but i bet they love it.

You could make a non alcoholic punch thats bright pink....have little plastic wine glasses so they feel grown up.

Try to make the room look like a ballroom - streamers help with this. Framing pictures of disney princesses along the room would make it look palacey.

Play pin the tiara on the princess (perhaps a pic of ur daughter as the princess),

Another thought i just had is to pick up crowns from burger king for the kids to wear, as they are totally free there

You could hide lots of sweeties in the garden (or gold coins like you get at christmas...symbolising the royals wealth), give each child a little decorated velvet drawstring pouch and have them hunt down as many sweets as they can...or a sweet with their name on it if you cant use lots of sweeties.

Oh and all parents who are managing the party should wear crowns - kids will love that.

As much glitter as possible wherever you can think to use it will glam the occassion up.

Little toy swords to give the boys would perhaps make them more keen to dress up, as it will help them to feel macho and suddenly make it more appealing!
