You must bring a gift to a shower, a housewarming, a child's birthday party, and any event which the invitation defines to be a gift required event. In the case of other parties, even the wedding reception itself, no gift is required. What IS required is a handwritten letter or note thanking the hosts for the wonderful party. One may send a gift along with or instead of the written message; this the usual behavior of wedding guests in the USA.
