That's got to be rough for him-- a lot of kids born near holidays often have their birthday overlooked or downplayed.

If your family can afford it, why not put a little aside to go spend the day out. That way you won't have to spend that exhausting day after Thanksgiving cleaning and preparing for a party-- you just leave the house, and come home with the presents.

If he loves video games, why not take him and a few friends to an arcade like Chuck E. Cheese to play to their heart's content. You don't even have to have a full party if you have a small group-- just pass out tokens (start collecting coupons for buy-1-get-1 free deals) and some soft drinks, then bring in a cake (they allow you to do that). Note on the invitations that it's just a play party, no meal-- only cake is served, and try not to have it around dinner time-- like 10 AM might be good because it's before it gets too crowded.

Or-- what my son loves to do-- he's going to be 13 next week. All he ever wants for a party is to invite a few friends over and play video games and watch movies all night-- they camp out in the living room. They like simple foods-- pizza, hot dogs, burgers, etc.-- some popcorn and chips, lots of juice packs and I bake a cake. Then I make them a pancake breakfast.

No major decorating, and pretty cheap-- he always has a blast. He prefers it because he knows he can get a better gift if we don't spend lots on a party.

I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but I live in FL so we do a lot of fall B-day parties with friends at the park. One year we had a Harry Potter theme party-- lots of candy and a game of "ground quiddich" with some balls and Halloween witch brooms I got at a dollar store. Decorations are minimal since you just have the party out there on a park bench. Sometimes we grill hot dogs, or sometimes we bring sandwiches.

Again-- this will save from heavy decorating and mess in house-- and you don't have to worry about space or anything because the park is big and there are so many things to do. Instead of Harry Potter, you could just have an "Olympics" games with races and tug-of-war, or, if you live where it's warm year-round like I do, water balloon and water gun fights.

Good luck and you are sweet to be thinking of your brother so far ahead.

IN WHAT WAYS does language have power? 10 POINTS!?

Aloha!

how? BE THOROUGH

PLEASE PROVIDE GOOD EXAMPLES.!!!!!!!!

Answer
Hi,
In several ways. First, let's adopt a definition of "power". You have power, if you can get someone else to do something that he would not have done by his own initiative.

So, the most evident "powerful" use of language is commanding with imperative verb forms: Clear the table! Shut up please! Polite versions include questions: Could you please leave me alone? and suggestions or invitations : I'd like you to open the book page 32.

Then you can manipulate others by giving true or false information that will make them act in the way you want: A sentence like "a car cash just happened outside" will make people leave a room to see the crash. "Justin Bieber comes to my birthday party" will make some people want to come, too, and others to go to another fine place.

A special case of this usage are prophecies. You can make a self-fulfilling prophecy by predicting something supposed to happen because people behave according to the prophecy : "together everything is possible" or "yes we can" (as electoral slogans in France or in the U.S.). A promise is a typical self-fulfilling prophecy: "I'll make you happy, if you believe in me". But you can imagine something more vicious: In a critical situation, a sentence like "There will be problems in food supply" may cause problems in food supply because people will rush to the supermarket and gather all food.

There are self-destroying prophecies, too. Parents often say things like "Oh boy, your clothes will get dirty" or "The dog will bite you" because they don't want this to happen. By saying it, they hope to make their kids avoid the bad end. "The average temperature will rise by four degrees" or "Polar bears will die out" are other examples of self-destroying prophecies because they are made in order to have people act by slowing down supposedly man-made global warming.

Finally you can also immediately accomplish "powerful" acts by talking. By saying "I apologize" you apologize, but "power" is involved only if another person hears and accepts it. In an official, institutional situation, the link to power is more obvious, due to the conventional powerful status of the speaker: A judge pronouncing a sentence, or the president of the International Olympic Committee saying "I declare the 25th Olympic Summer Games open" (or something like that) will make a lot of people act just by saying it. Well, this works only if he says it in the right place at the right moment. Alone at his kitchen table, speaking to his cat, the judge won't condemn anybody.
