I am having a birthday party for my 5 year old daughter. We just moved to a new area. How do you let the kids and their parents know that when they come in the house they will have to take off their shoes?

Answer
I don't suggest that you put that little bit of info in the invitation. Tell them when they get there but also have available alternative foot wear for those who are uncomfortable or not prepared (Smile). For instance, go to a Dollar General or Target (anywhere that has cheap flip flaps or slides) and buy some to have on hand in various sizes. Something that they can keep but something that is not going to break you. You can give them a pair of new ones to wear around the house.

If you have anyone that you have had over in the new area, they can spread the word (they probably already have) that you do not allow shoes in the house.

This is a hard one. While telling them beforehand allows them to be prepared, it also leaves time for them to decide no to come. If you do it at the door, they are already committed, have a kid who is expecting to attend a party and have probably already spent money on a gift. Bottom line is they probably won't leave.

Good luck!

Birthday Party Letter Regarding The FLU?

BLB

I'd like to send a letter to everyone invited that's coming to my son's 2nd birthday party this coming weekend regarding the flu. I'd like to ask them to use their best judgement in deciding to come if they aren't feeling well since there will be 2 seniors over 80 years old and maybe 5 babies under the age of 1. How do I write this letter without coming across like I don't want anyone coming, or coming across as a crazy mom?? I've tried writing it a few times and just can't get the appropriate wording. Is this even okay to write and send everyone?!!!?? You'd think people would stay home if they're sick but obviously it's not the case with this huge flu epidemic. I want to see all our family and friends... some of whom are traveling over an hour, but don't want to risk getting this flu in our house. we're expecting 25 kids and 36 adults btw. Anyone want to help me? Thanks!

Answer
My opinion is that its probably not something that you should put in the invitation. Im a crazy mom when it comes to that stuff (my little 1 has caught everything) so i know how you feel. I think you have 2 options. A. make it a small party this year - just family (you can be honest with them) B. Invite everyone you want to and when they rsvp maybe mention the whole "flu epidemic" thing and that way your letting them know how concerned you are about it. They may choose to stay home if they are not feeling well. OR invite everyone and once it gets close to the party send out an email saying"We look forward to seeing you on _____. Although we would love for all of you to be there due to the flu outbreak we ask that if you are not feeling well please do not feel obligated to come. we will not be offended by your absence and hope you get well"

Invitation advice for a 5 year old's roller skating party?

We are heving our 5 year old's 6th birthday party at a skating rink and we want to put something in the invitations about the parent staying due to the risk of injury. We don't want it to sound all legal and cold, but we want the parents to stay. Help me with the wording please.

Answer
A birthday party at the rink is a great way to let your child, friends and relatives celebrate the occasion with games, food and healthy fun. An afternoon at the rink is no more dangerous than a visit to the playground. The risks are similar in any situation where kids get a little bit of freedom and have anything to ride, throw, climb or in this case...skate on. Parents should be there to help enforce safety just as they would in a park or playground.

To keep your tone light but firm, try something like "Parental supervision required... parents on skates optional."

Or "We will need a hand (and maybe your arms, too) to help the little skaters."

If any parents question this policy, remind them that the kids will need help getting skates and equipment on and off â and there will be a lot of Kodak moments for those who are skating for the first time.

I teach kids aged 3 and up to skate. When in doubt tell kids to keep the big parts (head and chest) over the little parts (skates or inlines) and march instead of sliding or dragging the wheels. Most are mobile after about 20 minutes of supervision, if the parents are encouraging and don't scare the kids.

Feel free to email questions.
